Our Be Money $mart financial literacy initiative raises awareness about the current state of financial literacy across Pennsylvania and provides people with tools they can use to help them on their journey to financial independence.

It’s never too early – or too late – to learn how to be smart with your money, and it’s one of the most important lessons a person can learn.

With support from our community partners, we continue to work toward creating the next generation of financially secure Pennsylvanians. Interested in becoming one of our community partners? Let us know – connect with us through our online form.

Financial Literacy Scholarship Competition

In collaboration with Harrisburg University and Members 1st Federal Credit Union, we coordinate a Student Financial Literacy Scholarship Competition each year entitled, “What Does Financial Literacy Mean to Me?”

To enter, students in grades 9-12 are encouraged to submit a short essay or poem about financial literacy. Three winners, and three honorable mentions, are selected and announced during financial literacy month, every year in April.

Winners receive cash prizes from Harrisburg University.

Money $mart Mondays with PSECU

Auditor General DeFoor partners with PSECU on Money $mart Mondays, an initiative aimed at helping Pennsylvanians on their journey to financial freedom. Understanding how to be money smart is crucial to Pennsylvania’s future financial success, and through these virtual information sessions, we’re giving everyone the tools needed to make good money choices. Watch an episode below, which features information for college students on how to budget their money, save for graduation, and learn about their student loans.

Episodes are released on Mondays in April as part of National Financial Literacy Month. Each episode features important Be Money $mart information to help people make better financial choices.

Auditor General Timothy L. DeFoor stands at podium in library

“At a young age, I learned about the role of a public servant and the importance of giving back. Through our Be Money Smart initiative, we crisscross the Commonwealth, emphasizing the need for financial literacy education and recognizing those who have implemented programs within their schools, organizations, and communities.

We don’t do this work alone – we’re grateful for our community partners, who join us in sharing helpful information and free resources to learners of all ages in support of their journey to financial security.”
