HARRISBURG – Harrisburg University of Science and Technology President Dr. Eric Darr, Auditor General Timothy L. DeFoor and Members 1st Federal Credit Union Chief Experience Officer Mike Wilson today announced the winners of a statewide financial literacy competition for students in Grades 9-12.
“The contest winners understand that it’s never too early to start learning how to be smart with your money, and it’s one of the most important life skills you can learn in order to achieve future financial success,” DeFoor said, noting that April is Financial Literacy Month.
The top three winners were selected by a panel of judges from 114 entrants who submitted poems or essays on the theme, “What Does Financial Literacy Mean to Me?” The winners are:
- First Place ($1,500 prize): Kaitlyn Harrington, 12th grade, Hatboro-Horsham High School, Montgomery County
- Second Place ($1,000 prize): Hope Chapman, 10th grade, Biglerville High School, Adams County
- Third Place ($750 prize): Carlie Corson, 11th grade, Biglerville High School, Adams County
“We were excited to see the quality of the submissions,” said Harrisburg University President Dr. Eric Darr. “Congratulations to our winners and their families, as well as all those who participated, for appreciating the importance of financial literacy.”
“Financial literacy is a crucial life skill for people of all ages—especially our younger generations—but one that too few are learning,” said Members 1st Chief Experience Officer Mike Wilson. “Competitions like this help teach youth how to chart a course for their future and live well financially. On behalf of Members 1st, congratulations to the winners and thank you to the Department of the Auditor General and Harrisburg University for hosting this vital initiative and inviting us to help support it.”
The panel of judges included Auditor General DeFoor; Ryan Unger, President and CEO of the Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC; and Alex Halper of the PA Chamber of Business and Industry.
This was the 10th year that Harrisburg University of Science and Technology has organized this competition. Monetary prizes were provided by Harrisburg University; no taxpayer funds were used.
