HARRISBURG – Auditor General Timothy L. DeFoor today announced the recent release of tobacco settlement fund audits for health care facilities in Blair, Bradford, Chester, Clarion, Fayette, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lehigh, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties.
“These audits make sure hospitals have documentation to support the receipt of tobacco settlement funds prior to receiving reimbursement for uncompensated care,” DeFoor said.
Pennsylvania and 45 other states and six territories signed the landmark Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) in 1998, which settled state lawsuits against tobacco companies. Enacted in 2001, the state Tobacco Settlement Act (Act 77) allocated some of the billions of dollars in settlement funds to reimburse hospitals for providing care to uninsured patients.
